Femoral Shaft ORIF

The goal of this assignment was to create a sequence of illustrations explaining a part of a surgical procedure. This piece illustrates the procedure of femoral shaft ORIF (Open reduction internal fixation) using open compression plating of simple transverse fracture. This procedure was observed at the Surgical Skills Centre at Mount Sinai Hospital. The final rendering was created digitally in a pen & ink style.

Sketches

I took quick notes and sketches during the surgery, a few of them are shown below. Sketches included the surgical tools involved in the surgery, the surgical field, and important landmarks.

First Draft

For the first draft, I focused on the important steps of the surgery and created rough sketches.

Second Draft

I began to refine the line work and add more details to the surgical instruments. The surgical videos online and feedback from the surgeons helped me to create more accurate sketches at this stage.
